This week marked the beginning of Alltask undertaking its inaugural turnkey package of re-roofing works at a water treatment works near Canterbury in Kent.  The project involves 3 divisions of Alltask; namely Scaffolding, Asbestos Removal and Building and is headed up by Kelvin Nettleingham, the Alltask Project Manager.

Specifically the works include constructing 3 separate System scaffolds for general access (internal & external) with temporary roofs to each, removing spray applied flock asbestos containing materials (ACM’s), demolishing the existing roofs and replacing with a timber constructed flat roof with a 3-layer finish.  

The scaffold structures were erected in System scaffold for programme savings and to enable the Monarflex reinforced polythene sheeting to be fixed completely flush to facilitate the required enclosure for the asbestos works.  Additionally, System scaffold has the advantage of steel decks (rather than timber scaffold boards) which makes final clearance of the access equipment more comprehensive.

Removal of the original spray applied ACM’s is undertaken by using a wet method of removal via a multi-needle injection system used to permeate the ACM’s with surfactant, carefully regulated to prevent excess seepage. The injection heads will be held in position by means of temporary timber battens supported from the System scaffold deck via telescopic holding rods.

Following the removal of the ACM’s and the issue of a Final Clearance Certificate from the Client’s analyst, demolition and reinstatement of the roofs will be a typical timber construction, laid-to-falls flat roof covered with a 3-layer weatherproof finish.

The project has a 20 week programme period, and comes as part of an ongoing 3-year framework contract on which Alltask are a preferred contractor from the Client via a major UK utilities provider.
