Alltask was appointed by Enable Infrastructure Ltd to provide specialist access scaffolding as part of ongoing bridge maintenance works along the M40 Design, Build, Finance and Operate (DBFO) route between Junctions 1 and 15. The project forms part of a wider programme of structural maintenance designed to preserve and protect key highway infrastructure.
The works required the design, supply and installation of bespoke access platforms to the underside of bridge structures, enabling contractors to safely undertake repairs and repainting of structural steelwork beneath the bridge decks.
Following a successful tender process, Alltask secured Phase 1 of the programme, comprising two bridge structures located between Junctions 10 and 11:
- Overbridge
- Souldern Fritwell Overbridge
Working within a live motorway environment required careful planning and coordination to ensure safe delivery while maintaining the operational road network.
Providing access to the underside of highway bridges presents several technical and logistical challenges, including:
- Working adjacent to live traffic management systems
- Maintaining safe access for the workforce beneath bridge structures
- Designing scaffold solutions to accommodate varying bridge geometries
- Ensuring access platforms provided full coverage for steelwork repairs and painting activities
- Operating within restricted work areas while minimising disruption to the surrounding network
The location of the works and proximity of traffic management measures also limited available space for installation activities and site logistics.
Alltask’s in-house design team developed bespoke scaffold access solutions tailored to the specific requirements of each structure. The access platforms were designed to provide safe and efficient working areas beneath the bridge decks, enabling maintenance operatives to access all required areas of structural steelwork.
Close collaboration between the project team, client and site operatives ensured the works were carefully planned and delivered in line with programme requirements, maintaining the highest standards of safety and operational efficiency throughout.
The scaffolding solutions were designed to facilitate multiple maintenance activities simultaneously while providing reliable access for inspection, repair and painting works.
The access scaffolding has successfully enabled the bridge maintenance programme to progress safely and efficiently, providing the necessary access for structural steel repairs and protective coating works.
This project demonstrates Alltask’s ability to deliver specialist access solutions for critical infrastructure projects, supporting the long-term maintenance and preservation of key highway assets while working within challenging live environments.
