Bush House is a Grade II listed landmark on the Strand, originally constructed between 1925 and 1935 and formerly home to the BBC World Service. Its Portland stone façade and historic significance make it one of London’s most recognisable buildings.
Alltask is supporting the redevelopment of the Southwest Wing at Bush House, delivering complex scaffolding and access solutions for our client Kier Construction as part of a wider refurbishment programme.
Our works include the design, installation & management of a full-height, fully wrapped scaffold to all elevations of the Southwest Wing. The scaffold provides safe and secure access to facilitate:
- Portland stone cleaning and façade restoration
- Full window replacement works
- Roof-level access for mechanical & structural upgrades
The scaffold arrangement incorporates multiple access lifts and loading bays, ensuring efficient material handling while maintaining strict segregation and public protection within this busy central London location.
Access and Protection Measures
Given the listed status of the building and the constrained urban environment, careful planning and coordination were required throughout. The access solution includes:
- Fully wrapped façade scaffolding for environmental and public protection
- Secure street-level protections to maintain pedestrian safety
- Bespoke roof-level scaffolding to support the removal of existing plant and installation of a new high-efficiency plant room
- Temporary roof structures installed to safeguard the building during refurbishment and structural works
Internal access scaffolding has also been installed to support works within the existing structure, maintaining flexibility as the project progresses.
Wider Development
Alongside the refurbishment works, the redevelopment of Bush House includes the creation of The King’s Agora—a new circular, 360-degree immersive lecture space designed to become a focal point for students. Alltask’s access solutions play a key role in enabling these transformational works within the historic building.
