Royal Terrace Pier in Gravesend, a historic and operational structure, required essential restoration and maintenance work to ensure its long-term structural integrity and functionality. Commissioned by our valued client, the project focused on the complete replacement of the roof and improvements to the light turret. The works were necessary to address aging materials and environmental wear, with completion scheduled for April 2023.
Innovative Scaffolding Solutions
To facilitate these works while minimising disruption to the pier’s operations, our in-house design team at Alltask engineered and fabricated bespoke steel collars, securely fastened to the pier columns. These custom-designed collars provided a stable foundation for constructing a robust beam system that supported the main scaffold.
This strategic approach enabled the formation of a boarded lift beneath the pier head and across all external elevations, ensuring safe and efficient access for remedial works, installation of pigeon netting, and the roof replacement.
Challenges and Solutions
The project presented several significant challenges due to the age and delicate nature of the pier, its continued use, and the unpredictable tidal patterns of the Thames. To navigate these complexities, precise planning and innovative engineering solutions were required. Our team employed specialised scaffolding techniques to protect the integrity of the structure while maintaining accessibility for ongoing operations. Constant monitoring and adaptive working methods ensured that both safety and efficiency were upheld throughout the duration of the project.
Project Outcome
Despite the complexities involved, the scaffolding and restoration efforts were successfully executed, providing a stable and secure environment for the works. The completion of this project has significantly improved the pier’s durability, extending its lifespan and preserving its historic value while ensuring it remains fit for purpose.
Thank you to all team members involved in this intricate project. Their dedication and skill played a vital role in revitalising and securing the future of this important historic landmark.
